The Animal Hospital by the Sea is Whidbey Island’s newest full-service small animal hospital. We aim to serve our friends and neighbors and their beloved pets with complete veterinary care for many years to come. Located in the heart of downtown Langley, we welcome clients from all Whidbey communities as well as neighboring mainland cities. We hope you will appreciate our dedication and commitment to providing you with the best service available in a down home, personal atmosphere.
OUR PATIENTS
Our veterinary hospital is devoted primarily to dogs and cats, enabling us to focus on the pet health issues that predominate in these species. We have extensive experience in the testing and treating of breed-specific health conditions and enjoy working with local advocates on the unique concerns their particular breed presents.

OUR VETERINARIAN AND STAFF
Dr. Jean Dieden has nearly 30 years of experience dedicated to working as a small animal veterinarian in a wide variety of practice situations. She brings to the Animal Hospital by the Sea an extensive breadth of knowledge born from successfully working in all manner of circumstance with people from all walks of life, from farm communities in New England to bush villages in Alaska to emergency care in downtown Seattle. Having chosen South Whidbey as her home for the past 14 years, she is pleased to finally be able to fulfill her wish to bring her skills to serve her friends and neighbors in the unique community we call home.
Our veterinary staff is equally committed to providing outstanding pet health care to our patients. This talented team has extensive experience and a wealth of knowledge achieved through personal dedication and years of professional veterinary care.
OUR VETERINARY HOSPITAL
There are many ways to help the environment remain green. Emily Wadhams, formerly a vice president at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, once said, “The greenest building is the one that’s already built.”
When Dr. Dieden was looking for a location for a new practice in the area, the availability of the former Langley medical clinic building seemed to allow her plans to fall right into place. The zoning was right and the location in the heart of town along busy Second Street combined to make it an ideal choice. Langley designer Eric Richmond of Flat Rock Productions and contractor Gemkow Construction kept the project local and remodeling started in the late summer of 2011. As the superficial layers first put on almost 45 years ago were removed, the bones of the 1968-era building were gradually revealed. The building’s utilities, insulation, and floor plan were updated to meet current building, ADA, and energy codes. Further equipped with state-of-the-art veterinary equipment and technology, “114 Second Street” was finally re-presented to the Langley community as the modern, up-to-date facility it is in mid December 2011.
We are proud of the work that has been done and what we have made here in Langley and are eagerly looking forward to serving the South Whidbey pet community.
CUSTOMIZED PET CARE AND SERVICE
At the Animal Hospital by the Sea, we believe in working with each patient on an individual basis. There is no room for a “one-size-fits-all” policy when it comes to veterinary care. We will spend the time it takes to appreciate each pet’s specific lifestyle and needs, customizing our preventive care and treatment recommendations to best suite his or her circumstances. We believe in working as partners with our clients to see that all their dogs and cats are kept healthy and happy.
